Sweet melodies starkly confront the world with reality. An album that embodies the “beauty” that saves the world. Born in Georgia in 1935, Giya Kancheli is, along with Arvo Pärt, one of ECM’s two leading composers, and his recordings for ECM have brought him widespread international recognition. Both composers value tranquility—which could also be described as ECM’s label policy—and compose music that is “easy to listen to” yet grounded in deeply sincere themes. This album marks Kancheli’s tenth release on ECM, and its “accessibility” and “beauty” stand out more than in any of his previous works. Although the themes are serious, I have a feeling it will be accepted as (truly) New Age music. “Little Inver,” composed in 2003, takes its name from a small village on the outskirts of the ancient English city of Salisbury. (This is the first time Kancheli has written a piece inspired by a specific region or place name.) Because the area was a sparsely populated wilderness, the British government had used it as a military training ground. During World War II, prior to the Normandy landings in June 1944, the British government and the U.S. military evacuated all 160 villagers to conduct exercises simulating urban combat following the landings. After the war, the residents hoped to return, but due to the Cold War and the outbreak of the Northern Ireland conflict, Inver Village continued to be used as a military base; now, they are permitted to return only once a year, on the day of a special service at St. Giles’ Church, which was founded in the 14th century. Kancheli visited Inver in 2001 and felt that the village epitomized the absurdity of modern-day strife and conflict. “Little Inver,” commissioned by the Art Angel Foundation, was premiered at the “Three-Day Music Festival” held in Inver and recorded here. I suppose the Japanese translation would be something like “The Little Village of Inver”? A male singer—whose style defies classification as either folk or traditional—sings an ancient, anonymous poem associated with Inver Village in a simple, melancholic, and often halting manner, while a very small boys’ choir occasionally joins in, singing innocently yet in a way that foreshadows hope for the future. This work, lasting just over 35 minutes, is filled with a serene and crystalline sound throughout, as well as melodies that are sentimental yet sweet and nostalgic.
