Deanna Damrau is one of the most internationally acclaimed sopranos from Germany as of 2017. In June 2011, in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, when many foreign performers cancelled their performances, she came to Japan with her then one-year-old son and a babysitter, saying, "Music is the best thing to do in difficult times, She led the Metropolitan Opera's moving performance to great success, and her popularity in Japan grew. The title "grand opera" is a term used to describe a style of opera that was popular mainly at the Paris Opera House in France in the first half of the 19th century, and today, operas that are "large-scale" in various elements are often referred to as grand opera style.In addition to a script based on a historical theme, a large number of main characters, a large orchestra, lavish stage costumes, and spectacular stage effects, the drama progresses by means of recitative, and the composition is often in four or five acts, often including a ballet. The composer of this piece, Meyer, is a well-known composer. Meyerbeer, the composer featured in this issue, composed many such grand operas, and although his presence is somewhat subdued, his brilliant orchestration is said to have influenced Wagner.
