Description:

A new standard is set. Válek & Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra The Complete Symphonies of MartineauVálek & his Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra have released the complete symphonies of Martineau's native country in a single collection. The longest of the six symphonies, No. 1, was written within a year of his arrival in the United States and was commissioned by Koussevitzky in memory of his wife Natalie. In addition, No. 2, premiered by Reinsdorf, No. 3 by Scheiner, No. 4 by Ormandy, and No. 5 by Kubelík, show a variety of styles more elusive than Stravinsky, who was nicknamed "The Chameleon. The most important point in common among the five pieces is the period between the war and the immediate postwar period, and the fact that the war casts a shadow over all of them, not a little. The most popular of the six is dedicated to Munsch, who premiered it. This is the first set by Válek and others since the monumental recording by Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic in the 1970s, and is expected to set a new standard.
