During his tenure as music director of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, a British chamber orchestra, he was acclaimed for incorporating fascinating new music into the repertoire and for his insightful performances of both classical and contemporary works. This is clearly evidenced on this album. The first, John Casken's double concerto for violin and viola, That Satur Not, was written in 2012-13 for Zoetmaier, viola player Ruth Kilius, and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Inspired by a poem by John Dunn, the composition bridges the English Renaissance with contemporary music. Kilius is unique in his heavenly performance of Bartók's Viola Concerto, and Zoetmaier, who "increases his confidence with absolute power" in Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, is a masterstroke.
