Description:
Michel Legrand, a master of film music and a renowned jazz pianist, makes his first full-fledged classical recording. The new work by Michel Legrand, a master of the film music world and a renowned jazz pianist who has won three Academy Awards and five Grammy Awards, is his first full-fledged classical recording. Legrand is known for his sumptuous, jazzy orchestrations with a wide variety of instruments, but this album is a return to his roots at the age of 80. He has been active in the fields of jazz and film music since the 1950s, and as a jazz pianist has performed internationally, including with Miles Davis on his self-titled album "Legrand Jazz" (1958), but he originally studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with the most important composers of the 20th century He originally studied the fundamentals of classical music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, a master educator and composer who introduced many of the most important composers of the 20th century to the world. In the past, he arranged "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" into a symphonic suite for piano and orchestra and recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra. In his later years, Legrand continued to work energetically on his two new concertos, both of which make full use of classical techniques. The two new concertos, "Piano Concerto" and "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," are a blend of jazz and film music with contemporary music techniques, creating a new world of Legrand that is colorful, stylish, lively, and modern. The "Piano Concerto" features Legrand himself as soloist, while the "Cello Concerto" is performed by Henri Demarquette, an up-and-coming cellist who studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Jean Delon, Fournier, and Torturier, and in the United States with Starker, and has won numerous prizes at the Rostropovich International Cello Competition, and is also well versed in contemporary music. Henri Demarquette, an up-and-coming cellist with a deep knowledge of contemporary music, was the soloist. This "Cello Concerto" was written for Domarquette and performed with the composer himself at the piano. The orchestra is the prestigious Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the soloist is ably supported by Finnish conductor Mikko Frank, who has been the orchestra's principal conductor since 2015.Newly recorded in Paris in September 2016.
