Tunisian composer, singer, and oud (a stringed instrument classified as a lute) player Dafail Youssef is loved by jazz and world music fans worldwide for his avant-garde combination of North African moods and future jazz. This, his seventh album, is his first with American jazz musicians. Aaron Parks (P.), Ben Williams (B.), Mark Juliana (Dr.), Ambrose Akinmusire (Tp. on Tr. 2, 3, 4, 8), and many more, who are currently the most active players not only in the jazz scene but also in a wide range of genres, come together under the unique world of Dafail Youssef. The music is exotic and ethereal. Dhafair Youssef's exotic and ethereal ute and traditional Sufi singing are beautifully outlined by other parts, sometimes in unison. The intertwining grooves are of course a delight, but the American super-players are also here to add color to Dhafir Youssef's worldview, and each song has its own elegant, picturesque resonance.
