Recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Russell Elevard, whose credits include D'Angelo, Kamasi Washington, and The Roots, the 22-minute epic is an imposing anthem of perseverance, hope, and the importance of staying grounded even when the earth seems to lurch beneath our feet. It is a majestic anthem of song. Avi Thea sings, "What has become of us?" and yet still asks, as if to shout, that human beings may yet become something more than what we are. The finale, which comes in slow motion, feels like a fantasia of the future to come, a quiet place where we can grow together instead of falling apart. This is the beautiful and redemptive story of Animal Collective condensed into a single suite, a song about holding on to the speed of our progress even as the world moves forward at an unprecedented rate.Defeat" features guest musicians Samara Lubelski (violin), Leila Beaudreuil (cello), and Ben Chapoteau-Katz (saxophone). The Challenge (Live Edit)" is included on the B-side. The Challenge" is an improvised song that has only been performed live so far, and was created without rehearsal last year while the band was on tour as an introduction to "Strung With Everything" from the previous album. The recorded version on this 12" is a collage of 11 live performances from March to September 2022.
