The rare Préville sonata is a good work full of emotion. It was written in 1944, at the end of World War II, during the German occupation, when he was 83 years old, and its relaxed, easygoing nature goes well with the viola's relaxed atmosphere.
Hindemith's sonata is a classic for viola. It was written in the year of the end of the war, when Hindemith had returned from military service in World War I (his father was killed in action) and was filled with both grief and peace of mind. The subtly shifting facial expressions are exquisite.
The change of mood is Mendelssohn's mute song "Spring Song" and an arrangement of the theme song from the Egyptian TV drama "Fateen Amal Halby. The drama depicts the problems of Egyptian society and her legal battles faced by the main character, an Egyptian woman named Faten Amal Halby, and the music has a somber yet hopeful atmosphere. The sound of Egyptian folk instruments, the oud (genus of lute) and the riq (instrument similar to a tambourine), is also nice.
The program concludes with a work by Saint-Saens, who loved Egypt so much that he made 16 trips there during his lifetime.This is a version of a popular bassoon sonata written by the 85-year-old Saint-Saëns in the year following the end of World War I, arranged for viola, and the music here, too, is charming in its unassuming narrative style.
The album is bound in a digipack format, and the booklet (16 pages in German and English) includes a commentary by German music journalist and organist Hannah Schmidt.
The album title "Farasha" is an Arabic word meaning "butterfly.
