Description:

World premiere recording of Jan Kubelík's Violin Concerto No. 1 by the brilliant violinist Spörzl! The coupling is Mendelssohn, a long-awaited re-recording! Czech Pavel Spörzl boasts charismatic popularity. His unrestrained command of the violin has captivated audiences around the world. Following "Paganiniana - Works for Solo Violin" (HC-20069), the second release on the Hensler label is "Homage to Jan Kubelík," featuring the world premiere recording of Kubelík's Violin Concerto No. 1 and the Violin Concerto by Mendelssohn! Sporzl studied at the Juilliard School with Itzhak Perlman and Dorothy DeLay, and is an accomplished violinist who has won prizes at competitions around the world. He is also known as a virtuoso who was acclaimed as "one of the best players in 100 years" when he appeared in the season opening performance of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ashkenazy. Despite his flamboyant appearance, his most appealing quality is his poise and lyrical expression, and he has recorded major repertoire for the Sprafon label and other major labels.Jan Kubelík (1880-1940) (father of Raphael Kubelík), born in the district of Mihle near Prague, studied under Otákar Szewczyk (Sevczyk), a well-known violin teacher. A child prodigy, he showed outstanding talent from his teenage years and was hailed as a "second Paganini" in Vienna, London, and other cities as a virtuoso violinist. He was also a gifted composer with six violin concertos, one symphony, and a work for violin and piano. The Violin Concerto No. 1 was premiered in January 1917 at the Musikverein in Vienna by the Tonkünstler Orchestra, conducted by Oskar Nedvall, with himself playing solo. A melodious work of the late Romantic period, Spörzl describes it as "very technical, but musically very interesting. It is a truly charming concerto, typical of Kubelík, who was active at the forefront as a violinist. The coupling is the famous Mendelssohn Violin Concerto! The Czech premiere was performed on January 4, 1900 by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nedvall, with Kubelík playing solo, making this a fitting coupling for a "tribute to Jan Kubelík.Sporzl recorded it in the mid-90s, and now the long-awaited re-recording has been realized! The instrument used is the blue violin that Spölzl loves to play. This violin was made in 2005 by Jan Špidren, one of the leading violin makers in the Czech Republic. Spoelzl was so fascinated by this instrument that he owned it in 2006 and has been playing it as his favorite instrument ever since. King International
