In his production of “The Coronation of Poppea,” the story unfolds on a stage resembling a white, concave dish, and the characters’ costumes are primarily monochromatic. Amid such subdued colors, the red of the blood from those sacrificed for the fulfillment of Poppea and Nero’s love spreads with eerie vividness—a strikingly powerful effect. From *The Coronation of Poppea*, which is often portrayed in a sensual light, he draws out a beauty amidst the horror. The cast is multinational. Birgitte Christensen, who plays Poppea, is a soprano from her native Norway who specializes in Baroque music with a clear, beautiful voice. Jacek Raszkowski, who plays Nerone, is a sopranista from Poland who is active in Baroque opera. Tim Mead is a British countertenor. He specializes in Purcell and Handel and has sung the title role in Handel’s *Rinaldo* in a BCJ production in Japan. Patricia Bardon, who plays Ottavia, is an Irish mezzo-soprano. Although she is also known for her performances as Carmen, she is a mezzo-soprano highly acclaimed for her Baroque repertoire. Giovanni Battista Parodi, who plays Seneca, is a bass born in Genoa in 1976. He is regarded as a promising young Italian bass, and great things are expected of him in the future.
