Description:

DVD-BOX of the history and tradition of the Glyndebourne Music Festival held annually from May to August in Glyndebourne, East Essex, U.K. Founded in 1934 by John Christie, an aristocrat and wealthy man, the Glyndebourne Music Festival is the largest of its kind in the U.K., and is the largest music festival held in the U.K. He built an opera house (=Glyndebourne House) for his wife, who was a singer. The elegant music festival held in a beautiful English garden is a favorite of opera fans around the world. It is also a prestigious music festival that is said to be a gateway to success for new singers. This DVD-box contains a total of 26 hours of footage of 11 operas performed at the Glyndebourne Festival between 1972 and 1980. The London Philharmonic Orchestra has been the face of the festival since the days of John Prichard, who was the chief conductor at the time. John Prichard was the music director of the festival from 1964 to 1977, and left important repertoire for the festival such as "Macbeth," "The Marriage of Figaro," "Idomeneo," and "Così fan tutte. The production is directed by Peter Hall, the founder of the Royal Shakspeare Company, and features a distinguished lineup of singers including Kiri Te Kanawa, Janet Baker, and Ileana Kotrbasz. Ileana Kotrbasz as Susanna, Kiri Te Kanawa as Rosina, and Frederica von Stade as Cherubino, all three women's acting and singing abilities are overwhelming. Bernard Haitink (1978-88), who was also the musical director of the festival, gave a number of masterful performances, including "The Prodigal's Itinerary," "Don Giovanni," "The Magic Flute," and "Fidelio. The "Magic Flute" is a work of the "The Magic Flute". ≪In "The Magic Flute," John Cox's direction carefully depicts Mozart's intentions, and Felicity Lott, who has just joined the festival, sang in both "The Prodigal Child's Itinerary" and sang in her youth.
