Aksak Maboul

For the first time in half a century, fragments of sound from forgotten open reel and cassette recordings are being brought back to life. Before Aksak Maboul" is an amazing collection that documents the "pre-history" of the birth of the legendary experimental pop band Aksak Maboul. The sound document vividly depicts the trajectory of the band from its first encounter with psychedelic rock and free jazz in 1969 to its formation in 1977. Tracing prehistoric traces recovered from long-forgotten open-reel and cassette tapes, this collection unravels the circumstances that led to the formation of the legendary experimental pop band Aksak Mabul in 1977. A sort of coming-of-age story, it begins in 1969, when 19-year-olds Marc Orlandel and Paolo Radoni form a band that plays a fusion of psychedelic rock and free jazz music. The band, called "Here and Now" (no relation to the later British band of the same name), quickly grew into a wild 10-piece band, won an amateur contest, got caught up in the whirlwind of the legendary Amuzie Festival, and signed a record deal with the then-famous The band quickly grew into a wild ten-piece band, won an amateur contest, and after a whirlwind run at the legendary Amuzie Festival, signed a record deal with the then-renowned French label BYG Records (though nothing was ever released). More musicians joined the collective (including Vincent Kenis and Dennis Van Hecke, who later became members of Aksak Mabul), and the collective disbanded in 1972. Between 1973 and 1977, Marc Orlandel worked on a series of solo recordings and collaborations, exploring further elements that would become the backbone of Aksak Mabul's music. In the music, we will go through free rock, improvisation, quasi-kraut, modular/ambient electronics, piano pieces, percussion, and various moments of experimentation and sketches that later became what Aksak Mabul became and what he did not become (but could have been), and what it could have become, is hinted at.
