The latest release by the master musician Savard! Jordi Savall is a master among masters of ancient music, a philosopher who always has his ear to history. In recent years, he has undertaken symphonic projects with Beethoven and Schubert, while at the same time continuing his long exploration of the connections between the music of the West and that of the East. He believes that this will promote mutual understanding between the two (i.e., the peoples of the world). He is a UNESCO Artist for Peace and EU Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, and is dedicated to the promotion of early classical music and Mediterranean and world music traditions in order to explore the relationship between art and the history of civilizations, to bring cultures together, and to bring people together. Savard could not remain indifferent to the recent wave of immigration. After visiting an immigrant camp and being shocked by the living conditions, he decided to do something to help immigrant musicians. Music can't solve everything, but it can help people find their way to live like human beings" (Savard).On one occasion, a young man from Afghanistan in a prefab hut in the camp played the Dombra lute and Savar played viola da gamba in an improvised duet. At Savard's urging, "Orpheus 21" was formed, featuring musicians from these refugees, immigrants, and countries affected by war, famine, and disaster. These members not only perform with Savard and others, but also focus on future generations by teaching the music of their countries (some of which is not necessarily handed down in musical notation, but rather orally) to children in their native lands. This new album features Savard, members of Esperion XXI, and Orpheus 21 performing together. The idea of "light from the east (exOriente Lux)" (as the sun rises in the east, knowledge and culture came from the east), which was widespread in the Middle Ages, resonates beautifully in our time through fruitful encounters with repertoire from Syria, Afghanistan, Greece, Iraq, and Morocco.=The title means that the dawn always begins in the east, but it also refers to the intellectual light that comes from the ideas and cultural and spiritual traditions of the ancient civilizations of the east.
