Kubelík's masterpiece Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5 "Destiny" is released on PENTATONE's remastered series of SACD hybrid discs. This is the complete Beethoven symphonies recorded by the Czech master Rafael Kubelík (1914-1996) between 1971 and 1975. This recording is famous as a unique project in which he recorded all nine symphonies with different orchestras. This disc includes Symphony No. 2 (Concertgebouw Orchestra, recorded in 1974) and No. 5 (Boston Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 1973), and is a remarkable release from PENTATONE's remastered series! The Symphony No. 2 is a delightful performance, typical of Kubelík. The performance is emotionally rich and poised. The first movement is recorded in the usual arrangement in which the repetition of the presentation section is performed. On the other hand, No. 5 "Fate" is a masterful performance with a generally slow tempo setting, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra's profound wind instruments and rich ensemble are appealing. The bassoon in the first movement's recapitulation section has been changed to a horn. In addition, the presentation repetitions in both movements are recorded in the normal arrangement, which has been implemented.You can hear a masterful performance that reaffirms Kubelík's solid ability to derive and perform the characteristics of both orchestras. The remastering was done by Polyhymnia International, a Dutch company established in 1998 by the technical team of Philips Classics.
