Renaud Capuçon and Katia Buniatishvili, although they belong to different labels (Erato and Sony Classical), have performed together at the Lugano Festival in 2009, La Folle Journée in 2012, and the Prague Spring Festival in 2013. The two have recorded works for violin and piano by three Romantic composers, many of which they have performed together before. The works on this album consist of well-known pieces for violin and piano. These three works by Buniatishvili, a pianist whose popularity is soaring, and Renaud Capuçon, a young but consistently popular violinist, are a surprise from the very first Franck. They are not doing anything unusual, but somehow the atmosphere is different. They do not flaunt their skill and musicality, nor do they spark. It is extremely natural, but behind that naturalness there is an extremely elaborate calculation. If I were to describe them as women, I would say that they have "perfect natural makeup.The dreamy beauty of Grieg's two movements is wonderful, and the lyricism in Dvořák's is also superb, with rich expression supported by deep contemplation.
