Finnish epic folk metal band BATTLELORE’s second album, originally released in 2003, is being reissued on vinyl for the first time. This album further develops the fantasy-inspired worldview and symphonic metal sound introduced on their previous release, *Where the Shadows Lie*, and marks a point where the band’s musical identity was more clearly defined. The lyrical themes of this album are once again rooted in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien—specifically, the stories of Middle-earth—with characters, races, and battle scenes from *The Lord of the Rings* serving as motifs for the songs. As evidenced by the band’s name, which derives from the race “Battle-lore” within the stories, their music is closely intertwined with the worldview of Tolkien’s works. Sonically, the album continues to rely on a foundation of majestic atmospheres created by symphonic keyboards and melodic guitar riffs, structured around the contrast between male growls and female clean vocals. The song structures are more refined than on the previous album, and with the emphasis on melodic clarity and lyricism, the grandeur of epic metal and the melodic beauty of folk metal are brought to the forefront even more strongly.
