Description:
A collection of music for the Virgin Mary composed by Italian Baroque composer Cavalli a year before his death. Now, together with the already released "Five Praised Vespros" (CDS520) and "Evening Prayer for Holy Sunday" (CDS7714), we have three of Cavalli's most important religious works. Cavalli, a successor of Monteverdi and an accomplished opera composer, is best known for his Magnificat, written in the traditional Venetian style, but the Antiphona here is in a simple form with two separate choruses singing the text alternately, a relatively rigorous writing style compared to opera, which allows the chorus to sing the melody freely. The writing style of the Antiphona is relatively strict, but it is full of beautiful melodies and a solemn atmosphere reminiscent of the interior of a church in those days. La Pifaresia, led by Gini, is an ensemble specializing in works from this period. They are highly acclaimed for their Monteverdi works. Naxos Japan
