This is a collection of recordings by violinists from the Soviet Union, accounting for more than one CD.Boris Golitshtein (German reading is Goltstein, but in Japan he is more commonly known as Goldstein, a hybrid of English and German 1922-1987) was born in Odessa, Ukraine, and his father was a German born in Leipzig. His father, a German born in Leipzig, took violin lessons at the age of five and immediately showed talent. In 1935, he won fourth prize at the legendary First Henrik Wieniawski International Violin Competition, behind first prize winner Ginette Neveu, second prize winner David Oistrakh, and third prize winner Henri Temianka. She also won fourth prize in the violin section of the Eugène Ysaÿe Competition (later the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition) in 1937. In both cases, he was still in his teens. In 1974, he defected to Germany, where he spent the rest of his life teaching. All of the recordings here were made after his exile in Germany. Unfortunately, his technical decline is already noticeable, but his tasteful performance of Brahms' D minor sonata is as only a great violinist can play.(1/2) Tobu Shoji Co.
