Complete piano works by Bulgarian composer Pipkov, who studied with Dukas and Nadia Boulanger Vesko Stambolov has recorded the complete piano works of Lyubomir Pypkov (1904-1974), one of the leading Bulgarian composers of the 20th century. Born in Rovec, Pipkov studied at the National Academy of Music in Sofia before going to Paris for six years from 1926. While there, he studied with Paul Dukas (1865-1935) and Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) at the Ecole Normale de Musique. After returning to Japan, he composed modern Bulgarian music based on Bulgarian folk songs, influenced by Bartók and Stravinsky. He refined his own style. His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, choral works, songs, and film music in a variety of genres. He composed piano works in all periods from his early years to his later years, but his talent exploded in the late 1960s with an ambitious project called "Rudus Rhythmicus," which drew from Hindemith's "Rudus Tonaris" (Play of Sound). Pipkov created four large collections of metre-rhythmic piano pieces of varying difficulty.These works are "Pictures and Studies of Metro Rhythms" Op.69 & Op.77 (1967-71), "Caprices of Spring" Op.78 (1972), "From 1 to 15" Op.81 (1973) for young pianists, and "Children's Joy" (1974) for children. He composed 14 of the 23 pieces planned for "Children's Joy" but died without completing it. Vesko Stambolov, one of Bulgaria's leading pianists, has now completed the entire recording in honor of his country's greatest composer. Digipak version CLAVES.
