Recordings of three beautiful works by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho! Kalevi Aho was born in Forssa, southern Finland. He studied composition at the Sibelius Academy with Rautavaara and with Boris Blacher in Berlin. His compositions include five operas, including "The Life of Insects," and sixteen symphonies, as well as large-scale orchestral works, chamber music, and works for voice. 《Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra》 is one of 28 concertos completed by Aho through 2016. Commissioned by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra for Anders Paulsson, it was composed between fall 2014 and February 2015. It begins with a long introduction with the inviting melody of "Soprano" , the melody of "Never Ending" speaks of "Mysterioso, Largo," and the "Virtuoso" passage fades into "Silence." The three-movement structure is "Allegretto Marcato - Presto - Quasi Epilogo," in which the "virtuoso" passages fade away into "Silence. Soloist Anders Paulsson (1961-) is a Swedish saxophonist.He studied at the Manhattan School of Music, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and the Conservatory in Bordeaux, and is a player of classical, jazz, and world music. He is also known for his compositions, including the choral piece "Dunnigan Sanctuary," dedicated to a foundation that protects coral reefs and tropical rainforests. In addition to Aho's works, Judith Cloud (USA) and Rolf Mattinson (Sweden) have also composed concertos for his instrument. The "Quintet for Woodwinds and Piano" was composed for oboe player Ingo Goricki, artistic director of the Rottweil Summer Music Festival in Germany. The composition consists of "oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, and piano" as in Mozart's "Quintet in E-flat major" (K.452). The quintet consists of four movements: "Tranquillo - Allegretto ondeggiante" (rather fast and surging), "Toccata," "Nocturno," and "Burlesco. Solo I is the first in a series of 12 "solo" pieces that have been written so far, including Solo V (BISSA-2206) for bassoon.The music of the "Presto," which follows a slow introduction, has a primitive and sharp rhythmic technique that suggests Stravinsky.
