The Chiaroscuro Quartet led by Ibragimova takes on Haydn! The Chiaroscuro Quartet, led by violinist Alina Ibragimova, made a successful first visit to Japan in April 2016, and now they take on Haydn in a highly anticipated new recording, their first on BIS. The quartet performs classical and early romantic repertoire, and has released discs of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Mendelssohn on the French Aparte label, all of which have been well received. This recording includes the first three pieces (String Quartets Nos. 31-33) from the Six String Quartets, Op. 20. No. 31 in E-flat major maintains liveliness throughout. The first movement, in sonata form, is balanced and the distribution of ideas is skillful. The finale is in sonata form and is almost consistently played strongly. No. 32 in C major.The first movement is in sonata form with a moderato tempo, and the structure of the first theme is solid and constructive. The second movement is annotated as a capriccio and has structural freedom from two parts. The fourth movement is consistently played in sotto voce until the coda in the "four-subject fugue." No. 33 in G minor. The first movement, in sonata form, is solidly constructed and the first theme is dominant. In the development section, each phrase is also initiated by the first theme. Haydn's melodic paraphrase appears in this work. The chiaroscuro quartet's crisp performance is suited to Haydn. The quartet's performance is rich in shading, which is typical of "Chiaroscuro," an art term meaning a method of light and dark and shading that creates an impression of contrast. King International
