Having recorded only Mahler symphonies Nos. 1-6 with several orchestras, this is the first time that Mehta has recorded Mahler's Symphony No. 7. Although he has probably performed this symphony live before, his sudden release of it this time seems to indicate that the time is ripe. From the beginning of the first movement, the tempo is slow and heavy, reminiscent of the DG recording by Bernstein & NYP.
