Two New Channel Classics Artists! Bach's Gamba Sonatas on Viola! Debut album by Danish violist Mariee Stokmer Beker, who is the Assistant Principal Viola of the Basel Sinfonietta! A collection of J.S. Bach's viola da gamba sonatas played on Joseph Hill's 1776 viola! First Release. Based on the consideration that there was little repertoire of sonatas for viola in Bach's time, and that they were probably performed as repertoire borrowed from the viol, the three masterpieces of Bach written for viola da gamba (leg viola) and played on viola da braccio (arm viola). The program recreates Bach's Gamba Sonatas with a fresh and unique approach, based on historical information.Mariee Stokmer Beker is the Assistant Principal Viola of the Basel Sinfonietta, an orchestra specializing in contemporary music, playing both contemporary and historical instruments in a variety of orchestral and chamber music scenes. Ilaria Macedonio was born in Italy to a family of musicians. After graduating from the Accademia di Musica Brichciardi in Terni (Italy), she also studied at the Danish Music Academy in Copenhagen and the Royal College of Music in London, and has performed with many ensembles as an excellent pass bass player.
