Gustavo Nunez was born in 1965 in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay in South America. He studied bassoon with Klaus Tunemann and Kelly Camden, and won the Swiss Prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1987 and the first prize at the Carl Maria von Weber Competition in Munich.He has been the principal bassoonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1995, and is one of the world's leading bassoonists. Nunez's program for the bassoon as a "solo instrument" includes four concerto works by Ortuys from the Netherlands, Lamarque-Pons from Uruguay, Villa-Lobos from Brazil, and Gubaidulina from Russia.
