Gary Carr's Apprentice Stufe, the mighty double bass! Swedish-born Daan Steffe, who made his solo debut in Oslo in 1985 after working as Gary Kerr's assistant, has built a career based in Norway and is now one of the world's leading double bass players, serving as principal of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. In the album titled "Secret Memories," all the numbers except Kurtág, Scelsi, and Mattinson are works for solo double bass, but the standout is Swedish composer Rolf Mattinson's Concerto No. 1 for Double Bass. It was written with Steffe and his instrument, the Gaspard de Salo (created around 1580) in mind, and incorporates highly virtuoso techniques.With its rich colors, "concerto" excitement, and urban mood, this work is said to be the one that brought Mattinson international recognition as an orchestral writer. The contrabass solo pieces are also colorful, ranging from old-fashioned to highly virtuoso. Lyric Duet" by Norway's Tommesen (1946-) is an original piece for double bass and violin. Neagor's sonata "Secret Voice" is an arrangement for duo by Jacob Kulbær of a piece written for viola. King International
