Formed in 2005 by Sergio Sanchez-Ravel (Gopala Bhakta) (drums/vocals)—who remains the band’s sole original member to this day— This U.S. band, CORIMA—which made a name for itself among Zeuhl and Recomen enthusiasts with its urgent, aggressive avant-rock sound heavily influenced by MAGMA, Koenji Hyakkei, and other so-called Zeuhl-style acts and their followers—is set to release its first new album in nearly 10 years, *HUNABKU*, on the French label Soleil Zeuhl in 2026! This concept album, which features only the title suite consisting of seven parts, was created based on a science fiction story inspired by the Maya civilization that flourished in ancient Mexico—a theme continued from their 2012 release *QUETZALCOATL*. While the previous album showcased the band’s new direction with a sound that utilized the undulations created by the contrast between “stillness” and “movement,” incorporating abstract sections that absorbed elements from diverse genres such as contemporary music, free jazz, and world music, this new release sees the return of the impact-driven aggressiveness heard on the 2012 album—a relentless barrage of repetitive phrases in odd time signatures. The tense, urgent ensemble formed by the technically demanding drums and driving bass, combined with the expansive scat vocals and violin/saxophone that heighten the sense of mysticism, closes in on the listener—this exhilarating avant-jazz-rock sound, a direct descendant of ZAO and Koenji Hyakkei, is an absolute must-hear!
