Peter Donohoe is a renowned British pianist who has been invited by Simon Rattle as a soloist for his inaugural concert as Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic, and has performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions. Donohoe, who had a unique career as a percussionist in his youth, studied piano under Yvonne Loriot and Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and won a prize at the Leeds International Competition in 1981 and the highest prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982.Following the previous release "24 Preludes and Fugues, Op.87" (SIGCD 396), this second volume in the Shostakovich series features four works: Piano Concertos No. 1 & 2 and Piano Sonatas No. 1 & 2! Donohoe, who boasts a vast repertoire, has recently earned a reputation as one of the UK's leading specialists in 20th century Russian music for his excellent performances, and the appearance of the "Piano Concerto No. 1" is sure to be a big hit!
