The latest release from veteran pianist Lafayette Harris Jr. is an orthodox piano trio with perfect support from Peter Washington (b) and Lewis Nash (ds), produced by Houston Person and recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio. This is the latest release from veteran pianist Lafayette Harris, Jr. He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. His soulful style of playing is the result of his childhood church music and his membership in rhythm & blues and funk bands. A composer, producer, and arranger, Lafayette studied with Kenny Barron, Barry Harris, and Sammy Price, the king of boogie woogie. He was a regular pianist in Max Roach's band until the latter's death, and he played with many jazzmen.For the past few years, the saxophonist has been a regular member of the Houston Parson Quartet. This album was produced by Houston Parson and recorded last May (2018) at Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Inglewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The album contains 12 songs, three of which are Lafayette originals." You Can't Lose With The Blues" is a blues number from Lafayette's work, which was released in 2014 and is the closing track on Houston Parson's leader album "The Melody Lingers On," in which he also participated. You can hear Lafayette's playing full of blues feeling on all the other standard songs." His solo piano performance of "Please Send MeSomeone to Love" is also soulful. Support from Peter Washington and Lewis Nash, who have long played in Tommy Flanagan's regular trio, also shines through.The excellent recording by Maureen Sickler, longtime assistant engineer to Rudy Van Gelder, is also noteworthy. Recommended for fans of orthodox piano trios.
