This is the third installment in Prosseda’s exploration of Beethoven’s early works. Prosseda, one of Italy’s leading pianists, has been acclaimed for his complete recordings of Mendelssohn and Mozart’s piano works, as well as for his revival of the pedal piano. This album features four early sonatas composed between 1796 and 1799. The dramatic tension of the *Pathétique*, the majestic structure of No. 4, and the intimate, concise charm of Op. 49 stand side by side, vividly bringing to light the multifaceted nature of the young Beethoven. The piano used for this recording is a 1820 Conrad Graf. Its transparent bass, eloquent midrange, and sparkling treble lend these sonatas a fresh sense of nuance. Proseda uses the fortepiano not as a “tool for authenticity” but as an “instrument for discovery,” vividly bringing out improvisation, narrative melodies, and striking contrasts. Thanks to the Graf’s characteristics—its agile response to touch, distinct tonal variations, and the way it highlights even the significance of silence—Beethoven emerges as a more improvisational, experimental composer who is unafraid of taking risks.
