Description:
Traces the growth of the cello as a solo instrument in 18th century France. The album focuses on French music of the 18th century, when the cello as an instrument came into the limelight as it explored new sounds after the great trading era (the Age of Exploration) that enriched its cultural identity and shaped the basis for the salons and concerts of the nobility. Through works by important composers of the period, including Martin Berthoud, who ultimately founded the French school of cello music despite having studied viola da gamba, the album traces the growth of the cello as a solo instrument, replacing the viola da gamba that had long dominated European music. The cello is a solo instrument with a strong background in the lower register. This is the debut album of the Understories Ensemble, a period ensemble founded in 2018 that has strengths in lower instruments and is already making a name for itself at a young age. Tokyo M-Plus
