Description:
The third Blue Note release by Jonathan Blake, who continues to be the pinnacle of contemporary jazz drumming. This project originally began as a commission from the Jazz Gallery, one of New York's premier jazz clubs/art spaces, where he was exposed to the Black Lives Matter movement and continued to compose music with the desire to raise his voice through music. The preceding single, "Last Breath," is a tribute to the 2014 Eric Garner suffocation death in the United States. The album features Dana Stevens (as), Jaylen Baker (vib), Fabian Almazan (p), and Dezron Douglas (b). Additional guests include DJ Jahi Sundance (turntables) and Bilal (vo). The work has been expanded musically by Derrick Hodge, who has worked extensively with the Robert Glasper Experiment and film music, and co-produced this album. Blake said of the film, "When I was writing these songs, I was seeing and hearing the news (related to Black Lives Matter) on a daily basis. There were images of the lives of yet another person of color, black or brown, being taken at the hands of those who were supposed to serve us and protect us. I did not want to be numb to the events unfolding before my eyes. I wanted to raise my voice through music. When my sisters and I were growing up, our parents always said this." If you see injustice happening and do nothing, you are just as much of a problem." He said.
