Pianist/composer Gerald Clayton, a six-time Grammy nominee, releases his new album on Blue Note! This is his third album for Blue Note, recorded with Joel Ross (vibes), Elena Pinderhughes (fl), Marquis Hill (tp), and Kendrick Scott (ds). The album was also recorded with post-production by Cassa Overall. Inspired by club DJs and turntables, the record was created with the concept of a record that can play both sides A and B at the same time, inspired by that moment in a club when you can hear two separate songs at the same time, just before the DJ plays the next song. About this work, Clayton said, "I wondered if it was really possible for two separate melodies to coexist in harmony. Would one inevitably become a counter-melody to the other, a support for the more dominant melody? What does this experiment teach us about coexistence in a broader sense? I'm fascinated by this notion of coexistence, and not just in music.You have the question of whether two songs can coexist, but also whether two people can coexist, whether two cultures can coexist. One of the lessons we can take from this music is that there are moments of friction and tension, but there are also moments when two things can harmonize smoothly and peacefully," he said.
