Maciej Obara Quartet

Description:

This is the third release from ECM by the quartet of Polish-Norwegian alto saxophonist Maciej Obara. The latest, recorded in Oslo in the summer of 2022 in a work that expands on the narrative that followed "Unloved" (2017) and "Three Crowns" (2019), once again brings the quartet's sense of creative musical interaction to the forefront and is their strongest statement to date! It may well be the strongest statement yet. Obara's new compositions optimally highlight his intuitive musical relationship with Dominique Wania, while Ole Morten Vaughan and Gaal Nilsen continually transcend their rhythm section roles and interplay convincingly with the saxophonist and pianist. Attentive interplay is a hallmark of the group's approach, but the performance music was shaped by Maciej in solitude. When a pandemic closed the door on the Polish jazz scene and prevented him from touring abroad, he left Warsaw and headed for the hills and forests to compose these. It is the recollection of a solitary walker and a direct response to nature, especially the stark and dramatic landscape of his family's roots in the Karkonoshe region of southwestern Poland. two Polish musicians, Maciej Obara and Dominik Wania, two Norwegian players, The quartet, consisting of two Polish musicians, Maciej Obara and Dominik Wania, and two Norwegian players, Ole Morten Vaughan and Gaal Nilsen, have been together for 11 years, and the four strong individual musicians, each serving as band leader and project leader, have contrasting but complementary styles that define the group. Dominic Wania plays an important role throughout Frozen Silence and is becoming recognized as one of the outstanding improvisers of his generation. Obara commented as follows. "His work on his solo album, Lonely Shadows, released in 2020, has been instrumental in the development of our music and his contribution to this band." It is great to see him further open up his classical approach in his solo work with the quartet, paying attention to dynamics at every moment and concentrating on the small details that make the music better".Drummer Gard Nilssen's profile has also been enhanced by the release of his first ECM leader album, "Elastic Wave," last year.
