Elvin JonesThe completely unreleased live recordings left by John Coltrane immediately after his death with his own group are now being released! Elvin Jones was the drummer of John Coltrane's "Golden Quartet" and even after his death in 2004, he remains one of the greatest drummers in jazz history. This is the first release of the completely unreleased live recordings he made with his own group in 1967. This 2-CD set features a live performance at a small club called Pookie's Pub in New York City on July 28-30, 1967, just two weeks after John Coltrane's death. The quartet, with Joe Farrell (ts, fl), Billy Green (p), and Wilbur Little (b), played with white-hot intensity, and it was also one month after the recording of the classic album "Heavy Sounds" released on Impulse in 1968, which included "Raunchy Lita and "M.E." from that album. The album also features a guest appearance by organist Larry Young, who plays the piano on "Gingerbread Boy.The booklet also includes photos by Francis Wolfe and essays by Ashley Kahn, Zev Feldman, Don Was, and Bob Faresh, who was the recording engineer at the time.
