Description:

Celebrating the 70th birthday of guitar virtuoso Manuel Barrueco, the complete recordings for the former EMI BOX Manuel Barrueco has been one of the most important guitarists of our time and has been a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician for several decades. His supreme musicianship, technique, richness of tone, and extensive repertoire of baroque, contemporary, and popular music have earned him worldwide acclaim. This box set, a compilation of all of his recordings for the former EMIhe, attests to his unique artistry, described by the New York Times as "...a warmth and quality of singing that would have made Segovia smile. Manuel Barrueco was born in Cuba on December 16, 1952, and began playing guitar at the age of eight, studying at the Esteban Salas Conservatory in Cuba. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1967 as a political refugee; in 1974, at the age of 22, he won the Concert Artist Guitarist Award and made his Carnegie Hall debut that same year. His skill and musical interpretation, assured technique, sound, and artistry have earned him a reputation as an original guitarist in the same league as Andres Segovia, Julian Bream, and John Williams. His work expanded the repertoire of contemporary music and guitar, leading to collaborations with many well-known composers, including Arvo Pärt and Toru Takemitsu.Toru Takemitsu's last orchestral work, Spectral Canticle, was a double concerto written especially for Manuel Barrueco and violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann. Now a teacher at the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University, he is a major influence on the next generation of guitarists. *Because this is an imported item, the item (including jacket, outer vinyl, outer box, case, enclosure, etc.) may have minor scratches, folds, scuffs, dents, tears, stains, crushed corners, scratches on disc surface that do not affect playback, stains, image differences, individual differences, etc. at the time of receipt.
