The world's first reissue of a cover of Fela Kuti's classic "Zombie," recorded by a UK new wave band in 1982! The cover by the current band on side-B is also excellent. Suzie Cox, a member of the Norwich-based DIY band Vital Disorder, explains in detail how this unique track came to be recorded. "The song came to the band through Reneka van Gilst, a vocalist who was with us from January 1980 to December 1981. Reneka grew up in Nigeria and owned the original record. When she moved to Trousers House in Norwich, the apartment where Vital Disorders' bassist Chris lived, she sensed the vibes rising from the ground. Before we knew it, this song became a permanent fixture in our setlist. By the time we recorded it, Reneka had left the band to travel to Mexico, but choosing this song was the right call. It continues to be loved across generations.Reneka possesses strong elements of African beats, which had a profound impact on us." Though long known only to a select few, the track was rediscovered in late 2024 by BBC 6 Music DJ Giles Peterson. This led label boss Dom Cervini to take notice, resulting in its reissue on vinyl. However, instead of featuring the original punk track on Side-B, the label opted for a take by Kotoa, an Afro-dub band also new to the label, performing their own arrangement. This five-piece powerfully reinterpreted the Afrobeat genre over three minutes, infusing it with a vibrant protest energy reminiscent of the original work from over 30 years ago. The 7-inch-only release of "Zombie" features reworked artwork by award-winning designer Animisiwas. It pays homage to the original cover's handmade feel while respectfully updating it for 2025.
