Bossi's Organ Concerto, acclaimed by Verdi, a pioneer of Italian symphonic organ music, is a 30-minute melodic, easy listening, and powerful work. Also included is the pious Hymn to Jongen and the varied Poulenc Organ Concerto. The recording was made at a Protestant church in Switzerland and features the winner of the church's competition, Italy's Mantuoretti, playing solo, and Ukraine's Carmona conducting the Helvetica Orchestra of Switzerland. About the workBossi: Concerto for Organ, Strings, Four Horns, and TimpaniThe Italian late-century composer Marco Enrico Bossi [1861-1925] wrote music in a very accessible style. In this organ concerto, too, the grandiose sound is matched with easy-to-understand musical ideas, keeping the audience entertained for 30 minutes. Giuseppe Verdi, after reading the score, praised the music as "extremely bold and powerful in its effects. Jongen: HymnAlthough the master of organ music, José Jongen [1873-1953], wrote many grandiose works, here we have the mystical but accessible "Hymn" with a playing time of about 10 minutes.Poulenc: Concerto for Organ, Strings, and TimpaniThis popular piece is well known to non-organ fans. It is a single-movement work of 23 minutes in length and is composed of seven parts. It is a work in which one can enjoy the various tunes of the witty Poulenc. ＜Tommaso Maria Mazzoletti (organ) was born in 1991 in Novara, about 40 km west of Milan. After studying piano, he began studying organ at the age of 12. After 10 years as organist at the Abbey of San Nazaro and the Basilica of Vercelli in Sesia, near his hometown, he won the 2016 Protestant Church Organ Competition in Grand, Canton Vaud, Switzerland; in 2020 he will become principal organist at St. Therese Catholic Church in Lausanne. His CDs are available from Brilliant Classics, IMD, etc. ＜The Helvetica Orchestra is a Swiss-based orchestra founded in 2021 to promote Swiss Romantic classical music. The orchestra consists of young and talented musicians from Switzerland and abroad, and performs a wide range of works by famous Swiss composers, including Niedermeier, whose symphony will be premiered in June 2023.Under the direction of conductor Eugène Carmona, the Helvetica Orchestra is dedicated to preserving and promoting Switzerland's rich cultural heritage through music.
