Caldara's masterpiece, long active at the Viennese court
The late Baroque composer Antonio Caldara (1670-1736) was born in Venice, trained as a choirboy in St. Mark's Basilica, and quickly spread his activities throughout Europe, first at the court of Mantova, then in Barcelona, Rome, and finally Vienna. He would eventually have a long career at the court of Mantova, Barcelona, Rome, and finally Vienna. Caldara left behind a vast body of instrumental works, religious music, and operas in the Corelli tradition.
The four-movement sonata follows the tradition of church sonatas, alternating lyrical cantabiles at slow tempos with technical passages at fast tempos, highlighting the agility and warmth of the cello's tone. The performance is performed by an Italian baroque cello player.
The Italian baroque cellist Francesco Galligioni plays the solo cello, accompanied by members of the well-known ancient instrument ensemble "L'arte dell'Arco".
The booklet (English, 8 pages) includes a commentary by baroque cellist and musicologist Marc Fanzheuwijk.
