The latest installment in the highly acclaimed British SOUL JAZZ compilation series "STUDIO ONE" is, as the title suggests, a compilation featuring exclusively female artists produced by Coxsone. While the excellent compilation 'V.A. / FEEL LIKE JUMPING' released by US label HEARTBEAT in 2000 covered a similar theme, this 'STUDIO ONE WOMAN' also boasts a surprising lineup: over half of its 16 tracks are single recordings never included on albums. Drawn in by the adorable jacket, you'll discover a richly varied world of sweet & bitter sounds—from 80s dancehall tracks to disco-style numbers. It's truly a thrilling album that masterfully balances high-level palatability (=popular appeal) with depth (=nerdy appeal). ●SOULETTES "DEH PON DEM" "KING STREET" ~ These rare singles by SOULETTES, the vocal group featuring RITA MARLEY, both feature previously unreleased tracks. Moreover, "DEH PON DEM" isn't even listed in Studio One's single catalog "NEVER GROW OLD," making it a truly precious recording. Both tracks feature utterly charming vocals and harmonies that will make you dreamy, but "KING STREET" is the standout number—its interplay with the melodica is heavenly. ●DENISE DARLINGTON "WAR NO RIGHT" ~This is also a rare single-only track, sharing the same recording as JACKIE MITTOO's "SOMETHING ELSE." While the lyrics are quite serious—"War is wrong. Jar knows the right way..."—once Jackie's organ playing meets that adorable vocal, it simply sounds like nothing but a love song.Well, since opposing war is essentially a love song from a broader perspective, I think that's perfectly fine. ●HORTENSE ELLIS "I'M JUST GIRL" ~A track exclusive to the 12", and as reggae fans might guess from the title, it's a rework of her brother ALTON ELLIS's classic "I'M JUST GUY". It's also included on the advance 12" single for her album STUDIO ONE WOMAN. ●ANGELA PRINCE "NO BOTHER WITH NO FUSS" ~ Another 12" exclusive number. As you'll recognize from the intro, it uses the track from HORACE ANDY's "MR. BASSIE". The chorus melody and phrasing evoke an early 80s dancehall vibe—a great tune. I found myself imagining how cool it would sound if someone like JOHNNY OSBOURNE sang it~. ●JENNIFER LARA "I'M IN LOVE" ~ A disco-style number she recorded for Sta-One before her untimely passing in recent years. This track is also included on the advance 12" single.
