The young brilliant conductor Rahaf Shani's Mendelssohn is full of life and precision. The program also includes Shani's orchestral arrangements of three mute songs. Born in Tel Aviv in 1989, Shani became the youngest ever Chief Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018, and will serve as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra from 2021. He is also an active pianist. He has become one of the most sought-after conductors of the moment, receiving constant offers from the world's most prestigious orchestras and music festivals. In Mendelssohn's "Scottish Symphony," he carefully moves through this dark and melancholy piece, but the firm singing creates a dense sound construction full of vitality, and the interplay of the inner voices is clear and fresh. Toward the final movement, the tempo is fast, but the music is profound and full, and the whole is held together by close communication with the orchestra and a high level of expressiveness based on a deep understanding of the work. Rahav Shani's own orchestral arrangement of the three "Mummets," which was also performed on the 2023 visit, is so brilliantly arranged and performed that it seems as if Mendelssohn's paintings at the piano were directly painted on a large canvas, as if Mendelssohn himself had arranged them.
