"The Life of Hanako Kiryuin" is based on a novella by Tomiko Miyao, a native of Kochi who rose to fame in the late 1970s as a popular author of historical novels featuring female protagonists, such as "Yokirō." This was the first time a Miyao work had been adapted into a film by Toei, and its massive success led to a series of subsequent adaptations, including "Yokirō," "The Dance of the Prologue," "The Oar," and "The Night Train." Directed by Hideo Gosha—a master filmmaker known for his hard-boiled period dramas at Shochiku, including *Goyoga*, *Hitozari*, *Unmugi Nizaemon* (1978), and *Yami no Karyudo* (1979)—this was his first film for Toei. The screenplay was written by Koji Takada, a craftsman known for his gritty, violence-driven works ranging from the *Mamushi no Kyodai* and *Nihon no Shuryo* series to *Proof of the Wild*. Set in Tosa, Kochi, during the Taisho and Showa eras, the film dynamically portrays the drama surrounding Seigo Kiryuin (Tatsuya Nakadai)—a legendary outlaw known as “Oni-Masu”—through the eyes of his adopted daughter, Matsu-e (Masako Natsume), as well as the turbulent days following the birth of his biological daughter, Hanako (Kahori Takasugi). This is a representative work in which Masako Natsume’s all-out performance—despite her untimely death at a young age—became a major talking point; the ensemble cast of alluring actresses such as Shima Iwashita, Atsuko Sendo, Akiko Kana, Akiko Nakamura, and Emi Shindo is also a highlight.
