Live Critique Of Judgement

Description:

Recorded live on June 20, 2021, at Bonobo in Tokyo. No rehearsal. No overdubs. A record of a completely improvised performance that emerged in that very moment. Live Critique of Judgment (Excerpt from the liner notes) The session that day took place with absolutely no prior planning—it was a complete wing-it affair. For Tabata, who plays both guitar and bass, the appeal of improvising with Morita lay in the fact that while it’s generally easy to predict the next note a fellow string player will play, the sounds produced by Morita—on keyboards and live electronics—were completely unpredictable. On the other hand, Morita describes Mitsuru Tabata as a guitarist with explosive musical energy and precise direction—a musician with a rich vocabulary supported by a wide range of musical influences and a keen sense of the dynamics of sound. On this day, Morita had prepared drum patterns on his modular synth; while incorporating special glitch noises, he repeated the rhythm starting from the second song to create a space where Tabata’s guitar could easily unfold. For his part, Tabata also refrained from overly complex interpretations, creating a space where Morita could easily intervene. Perhaps because of this, to the listener’s ear, one can sense acoustic spaces that still feel open here and there. In 2021, the situation—in which not only the music scene but also lifestyles and the economy became unstable due to the COVID-19 pandemic—resembles the social turmoil and chaos of the late 1960s. Although this is a performance by just the two of them, it might be worth listening to it while thinking in the distant background of music collectives such as the AACM in Chicago, the early Amon Düül in Germany, the Scratch Orchestra led by Cornelius Cardew in the UK. Tabata’s guitar, with its psychedelic effects, is as usual, but when combined with Morita’s rhythm, it sounded to me like Krautrock in the process of self-destruction. This recording is improvisational music that seems to have been born in the pockets of space and time within a society in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it can truly be called a precious record.
