Description:
The 1955 recording by Böhm and the Vienna Philharmonic—widely regarded as the pinnacle of the acclaimed masterpiece *Die Frau ohne Schatten*—is finally available on SACD! A crystal-clear stereo recording. An outstanding recording. Newly remastered from the original analog master tapes in Austria! Includes a song-by-song translation and is available at a special price. This recording is a monumental source originally captured by Decca in 1955 following the opening performance at the newly reconstructed Vienna State Opera; it marked Böhm’s first studio recording. Although a 1977 live recording with the Vienna Philharmonic was later released on DG, it contains numerous cuts. In contrast, this Decca recording features very few cuts—with the exception of a few minor ones—making it exceptionally valuable. Beam enjoyed the deep trust of Richard Strauss; having premiered *Die schweigsame Frau* in 1935, he was consistently recognized as the foremost authority on the performance of Strauss’s works, particularly after the death of Clemens Krauss (his final recording before his death was *Elektra*, released on video). "Die Frau ohne Schatten" features one of the largest orchestral scores in Richard Strauss’s oeuvre, with extremely intricate orchestration; coupled with its complex libretto, it is not often performed. There are few recordings of the work; in the early days of stereo, this Decca release and the DG recording featuring Kailbert (a 1963 live performance) were the most notable. However, for some time afterward, there were virtually no significant studio recordings, and it was not until the release of Savallish’s EMI recording and Solti’s Decca recording in the late 1980s that the full scope of the work became accessible. Perhaps due to the large scale of this production, it is often performed on significant occasions, and some of the surviving live recordings are documented as exceptional performances. Furthermore, Savallish conducted a performance in Japan in 1992, leading the Bavarian State Opera with direction by Ennosuke Ichikawa and costumes by Hidee Mori; a video release of this performance sparked a temporary boom at the time. As a recording of *The Woman Without a Shadow*, this Decca recording conducted by Böhm holds great historical value. Considering its excellent sound quality and the suitability of the cast, it is no exaggeration to say that it remains a definitive recording and a definitive reference to this day. (1/2)
