After recording the complete Beethoven piano sonatas for the VOX label, Brendel made analog recordings for PHILIPS from 1970 to 1977. The PHILIPS recordings of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas are still widely listened to as standard recordings. Brendel recorded the complete works digitally for the third time between 1992 and 1996. The complete works were much talked about in the heyday of the CD era, and with the excellence of the recordings, they are still highly regarded today as new standard recordings that go beyond the standard.
