Sue-Ann Chai is a master of both modern and fortepiano, a soloist and chamber musician based in the Netherlands, and a renowned pianist who has frequently performed in Japan as a partner of Shunsuke Sato. The album, entitled "Extemporize," meaning improvisation, features Schubert's late "Improvisations" and early "Fugues" on a Rosenberger circa 1820 Vienna-made fortepiano on loan from the Dutch National Instrument Foundation. Using a piano made in the city where Schubert lived during his lifetime, the program delves deeply into Schubert's music through the "Impromptu" and "Fugue," which are opposites, yet inextricably linked.
