Description:
The Italian Woman of Algiers" was the center of attention at the 2013 Pesaro Music Festival. Even at the time Rossini (1792-1868) was active, there was a conflict between the European and Muslim worlds, but the then 21-year-old Rossini portrayed this as something very enjoyable without being too serious. He wrote the opera in only 27 days, but it is hard to believe that it was written in such a short time. This production takes place in the 1960s and is set in the oil fields of a desert on the coast of North Africa. Oil rigs and cartoons are used nicely as backdrops. Mustafa is an Algerian oil tycoon, dressed in a skinhead, aloha shirt, and short pants, who dances and sings all over the stage. He dances and sings all over the stage, sometimes with a lick of his tongue, and sometimes with a bit of a smile on his face.Mustafa is a villain by nature, but in Esposito's hands, he becomes a very lovable uncle. Isabella is prepared to do anything to save her beloved Lindoro, and eventually attracts Mustafa's attention by singing and dancing in a bathing suit. Golichova's style is heavenly (opera singers these days should not be as large as they used to be). The role of Lindoro is played by the remarkable tenor Cie Iger. His Rossini has become more and more wonderful. Anyway, this is an enjoyable opera without any complaints. Naxos Japan
