The opera *Don Carlo* is a story of love and hatred centered on the Spanish royal family, based on Schiller’s play. Originally composed in five acts in French, it was later translated into Italian and, after several revisions, settled into this 1884 version. The ballet music and the entire first act of the French version were completely cut. This condensed the narrative, resulting in a highly concentrated story. With its many captivating arias and memorable moments, it remains a highly popular work to this day. The Teatro Regio di Torino is a theater with a long history, having held its grand opening in 1740. Although it went through repeated cycles of decline and revival—including a period of splendor in the early 1900s when Toscanini served as music director—it was destroyed by fire in 1936. It ceased to function as an opera house for nearly 40 years. However, reconstruction began in 1965, and a reopening ceremony was held in April 1973, breathing new life into the venue. Its productions in recent years—which feature lavish costumes and traditional staging, a rarity these days—have consistently received high praise from around the world. This 2013 production of *Don Carlo* is a revival of the highly successful 2006 production. Told against a backdrop of sumptuous costumes and sets reminiscent of a Velázquez painting, this captivating story is sure to enchant every audience member. Ramón Vargas shines in the title role with his beautiful voice, while the characters surrounding him deliver compelling performances, and the orchestra, conducted by Noseda, weaves a rich, full-bodied sound.
