A new video release of the opera *Orfeo* by master director Savall is now available! Orfeo, a Thracian bard, journeys to the underworld in pursuit of his wife Eurydice, who died after being bitten by a poisonous snake. Upon reaching Pluto, the ruler of the underworld, Orfeo pleads for permission to bring his wife back to the surface. With the intercession of his wife, Proserpina, Pluto grants Orfeo’s request—but on the condition that “until he reaches the surface, he must never look back at his wife following behind him”… In 1607, Monteverdi’s *Orfeo*, which would come to be hailed as the first masterpiece of the newly born genre of “opera,” premiered in Mantua. This disc features *Orfeo*, recorded live in June 2021 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where early music maestro Jordi Savall conducted Le Concert des Nations. This marks Savall’s second video recording of the work (the first was in 2002 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona). The role of Eurydice is sung by Luciana Mancini, a leading figure in the Italian early music scene, with the role of Orfeo played by the rising French star Marc Moyon. Julio Zanardi, a veteran singer who portrayed Orfeo in the recording from 19 years ago, appears in this production as Apollo, Orfeo’s father. Directed by Pauline Beyer, the staging is simple yet striking: the earthly world is represented by deep red flowers brought onto the empty stage by singers and dancers, while the underworld is depicted through monochrome set design. Combined with a stellar cast of singers and Savall’s musical arrangement, which has gained even greater depth, this production breathes new life into a work that can be considered the very essence of “opera.” Naxos Japan
