Description:
This is a collection of string quartets by Sinigaglia, a composer and mountaineer from Turin, Italy. Although Sinigaglia, who was of Jewish descent, was oppressed by Nazi Germany and tragically died, all of his works boast the same refreshing beauty as the mountains he loved so much. This second collection, following the first (8.574183), contains mainly small pieces written for string quartet. He was a pupil of the violinist Giovanni Bolzoni, and his mastery of stringed instruments was inherited from him. On this album, we can hear his early works written mainly in 1888-89, although the date of composition is unknown for some of the pieces. The lyrical melodies reminiscent of Italian operatic arias, such as "Romance" featuring horns and "Ave Maria," with its simple but impressive chromatic harmony, are memorable. Also worth listening to is "Trio=Selenata," a work from 1906 that evokes the style of the Baroque. Naxos Japan
