Description:
A collection of beautiful cello concertos by leading Russian composers, performed solo by cellist Lee Wei Quing, who won second prize at the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition. However, only one work, Glazunov's "Concerto Ballata," is labeled a "concerto. The other pieces are all given fancy names with a storyline. Tchaikovsky's famous "Variations on a Rococo Theme" was composed for his friend Wilhelm Fitzenhagen. However, there was a dispute because Fitzhenhagen made changes without permission, but in the end, this version was better, and today the "Fitzhenhagen version" is performed with pride. Other works include Rimsky=Korsakov's "Serenade" with its brightness and a touch of sadness, and Glazunov's "Concerto Ballata" dedicated to Casals, which is profound and beautiful music that evokes the vastness of Russia.
